Before this course, I couldn't make sense of my observations until this course.
I actually hadn’t thought about the Big Dream as a separate component of planning my course. I often daydream of the ways course content will apply to various areas of my student’s life but have always left it to the student to discover. The exercise of writing these thoughts down as a touchstone of the design process hadn’t occurred to me. I have to admit, it was exciting!
I am excited to line everything up with outcomes-assessment-activities. I speak to students about how activities fit into the outcomes the program is committed to, so this work reinforces and strengthens it. I see lots of room for improvement but think this work is better for faculty and students....it's what I've been striving for on a mostly informal, trial and error basis.
This course taught me the importance of sharing my communication plan to students before the semester starts. I believe I would increase student engagement if I share with students at the start of the semester that this weekly announcement is an integral part of the course. I'm excited to create an official communication plan, and I am even more excited to share this plan with students.
I feel like I do a lot to make my course accessible, but after this discussion I realized that there are many things I do not do. I tend to hand-write my notes instead of typing them. However, if a student had a visual impairment, I don't believe they would be able to have my hand-written notes read aloud by any software, so maybe I need to create a typed version of what I typically write down so that they could access that.
We all learn at different rates in a school environment. But if we aren’t careful, late starters who might otherwise be very bright may fall behind their peers. If used properly, modern technology can level the playing field and allow each and every one of us to learn to our full potential in ways that suit our unique learning ability.
By learning to use CATs effectively to discover how well learners are understanding and processing the information in my courses, I can adapt my instruction to best guide them to attaining course outcomes and will create a positive, learner-centered environment where everyone feels valued and respected. That then, may well become the hub of how I decide the quality of my courses.
Stewart’s story at the beginning of Chapter 11: Reflecting on Your Teaching was something that hit home for me. Many faculty have experienced what this professor shared about his “aha” moment that changed his teaching to better engage students. Reading this in the course from the eBook helped me see what I could do in my own teaching!
Taking this course was an eye-opening experience. Being an introvert, of course I design my course more like how I like to learn. I didn’t realize how I could design to balance a set of learning experiences for both extroverts and introverts. I now understand why this is important so that all of my students can feel valued and successfully thrive!

I could relate to the ways I learned in the traditional model prior to the Pandemic and the ways teaching and learning was forced to pivot over the past couple of years.
